Did Jesus Promise to Return in the Disciples’ Lifetime?

We are writing a response in regards to a common misconception. This is reflected in a post written by one of our readers. Jesus never told his disciples that He was coming back in their lifetime. It is one thing to read the Bible, and it is another thing to understand what it’s saying. If you look at the text he is referring to in Matthew 16:28,

Verily I say unto you, there be ‘some standing here’ which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.

Matthew 16:28

That happens in the very next verse. Continuing in chapter 17:1, the bible states that,

And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, (the some) and brought them up into a high mountain apart (from the other disciples), and was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with Him.

Matthew 17:1

Continuing in verse 9,

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of Man be risen again from the dead.

Matthew 17:9

Mark 13:29 tells us that Jesus will return after the Great Tribulation which has not happened yet (not referring to the Rapture)...

So you in like manner, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

Mark 13:29

This confirms what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 24. In Revelation He says many times “I come quickly”. That did not mean that day... That means, when He comes, it will be swift and sudden. And yes, the prophecies tell us that Jesus will return in the generation that sees all these things. We need to be ready. If you are not ready to meet Him, you need to be scared. Although, for the Christians who put their trust in the Lord, there is nothing to be afraid of.

Let’s not be like 2 Peter 3:3-4, which says,

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

2 Peter 3:3-4

Thanks for reading the post, and as always, comments are welcome... It encourages us to study.
